worldview
Warning - cliché Einstein quote coming up... “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." I really do believe it but it's easy said then done. Few world events happen in a vacuum, dissimilar enough from everything else to have no value for application to other circumstances. Many barriers we feel so strongly around us are often ingrained by cultural teachings or assumptions and we feel that this understanding must be the same across the universe; I know I have. However, in many cases challenges in educational policy, energy issues, and political and social barriers have already been resolved in an applicable fashion by someone else in some other nation or cultural tradition, either in the present or historically. It is not that history repeats itself per se but it can provide clues regarding what has worked before and what has not. So why not apply our understanding of what has happened in the past or elsewhere when making a decision over present world affairs? The flexibility to modify our perspectives on a global issue must become an intentional habit and that's what global affairs is all about.
Let's not only talk about what is happening, but "Why?", "From what perspective is this information coming?", and "Is there more to the story?" Through this lens, I looked at interactions between states and private industry, from multinational corporations to the independent small business in my graduate research. I also applied this to the study of program evaluation and various topics on the role of information technology in society.
I hope to utilize and build upon these skills and worldview as I move forward in my professional and personal life.
